Gérald Butticaz, autodidacte, peintre, sculpteur, graveur est né en 1946 à Montreux en Suisse.
Après ses écoles effectuées à Montreux et Lausanne, il fait une première formation de monteur en chauffage. C’est là qu’il découvre le travail au chalumeau. En 1962, il crée ses premières sculptures destinées à sa famille et ses amis.
En octobre 1964 il émigre en Australie jusqu’en 1968.
De retour en Suisse il passe une année à Montreux, sa ville d’origine. Lors d’une visite chez un ami, il fût frappé par la beauté d’une peinture à l’huile qui le marquera et suscitera comme un appel pour cette discipline.
En 1970 il s’en retourne en Australie ou il pratique divers métiers. En 1973, des amis lui proposent un partenariat en Nouvelle-Zélande. Il y restera jusqu’en 1980 tout en pratiquant son art dans la peinture et la sculpture.
Il reste très marqué par la beauté et la diversité des paysages et des cultures au travers de ses nombreux voyages en Europe et en Asie, ainsi que sur le continent américain. Ceux-ci influenceront sa peinture comme sa sculpture. Gérald Butticaz, comme beaucoup d’autres peintres, est très sensible à l’harmonie des couleurs, le bleu étant sa préférée. Elle représente pour lui l’infini, l’inconnu, la profondeur, l’apaisement, l’eau et le froid, mais c’est aussi une couleur qui rassemble c’est pourquoi elle est très présente dans certaines de ses œuvres.
En 1981 Gérald Butticaz s’établira à Bevaix dans le canton de Neuchâtel. Il y installera son atelier de peintre et de sculpteur ainsi qu’une petite galerie pour ses oeuvres.
Son amie lui enseignera la gravure, l’eau-forte, puis ensemble ils découvriront la technique de l’aquarelle.
En 1990 lors de vacances dans les vallées Maggia et Verzasca au Tessin, il est inspiré par cette nature sauvage, ces rivières et leurs énormes blocs de pierre. C’est là qu’il pratiquera pour la première fois le land-art.
Plutôt discret, il n’est pas très attiré par les expositions. Toutefois, en mai 2006, il a été invité pour participer à l’exposition collective de MailMali avec plusieurs peintres et graveurs Neuchâtelois reconnus en Suisse et à l’étranger.
En novembre 2013 il expose chez un ami à la galerie Indigo à Lausanne.
Aujourd’hui il se prépare pour une exposition combinée peinture et sculpture qui aura lieu en 2015.
Gérald Butticaz, a self-taught painter, sculptor and engraver was born in 1946 in Montreux, Switzerland.After his schooling in Montreux and Lausanne, he started his first training as a heating fitter and it was there that he discovered working with a blowtorch. In 1962, he created his first sculptures destined for his family and friends.In October 1964, he emigrated to Australia until 1968.On his return to Switzerland, he spent one year in Montreux, his town of birth. During a visit to a friend, he was struck by the beauty of an oil painting that deeply impressed him and generated his vocation for this discipline.In 1970, he returned to Australia where he carried out different professions. In 1973, his friends proposed a partnership with him in New Zealand. He stayed there until 1980 where he continued to practise his art in painting and sculpture.He remains deeply marked by the beauty and diversity of the landscapes and the cultures he came across during his numerous travels in Europe and Asia as well as in the continent of America. These voyages have greatly influenced his painting and sculpting. Gérald Butticaz, like many other artists, is highly sensitive to the harmony of colours with blue being his favourite. This colour represents for him infinity, the unknown, deepness, peacefulness, water and cold, but it is also a colour that brings together and this is why it is so present in a certain number of his works.
In 1981, Gérald Butticaz settled in Bevaix in the canton of Neuchatel where he installed his painting and sculpting workshop as well as a small gallery to display his works.
His lady friend taught him engraving and etching and then together they discovered the techniques of watercolour painting.
In 1990, during his holidays in the valleys of Maggia and Verzasca in Ticino, he was inspired by their unspoilt nature, their rivers and their enormous boulders. That was where he practised for the first time land-art.
Rather discreet, he is not really attracted by exhibitions. However, in 2006, he was invited to participate in a collective exhibition of MailMali with a number of painters and engravers from Neuchatel who were well-known in Switzerland and abroad.
In November 2013, he held an exhibition at the Indigo Gallery owned by a friend in Lausanne.
Today he is now preparing to organise an exhibition combining both his paintings and sculptures to be held in 2015.
